What is the Most Popular Style of Roof in Northern Virginia?

Let's start with style. There are several popular styles of roofs in Northern Virginia, but the most common are gable and hip roofs.

Gable roofs are traditional triangular-shaped roofs that slope down on two sides, while hip roofs have slopes on all four sides that come together at the top.

Both styles suit the region's climate and architecture well, providing good ventilation, stability, and resistance to high winds and heavy snow loads.

What is the Most Popular Type of Roofing Material

When it comes to the average residential home, there is no doubt that asphalt shingle is the most commonly requested material.

And not just in Northern Virginia. In fact, almost 90% of homes in the US use composite asphalt shingles because they're affordable, durable, and easy to install. Asphalt shingles only cost $1.50 to $5.50 per square foot or roughly $8,000 per roof installation.

Not only is this option generally the most practical choice for many homeowners, but asphalt shingles also come in a variety of colors and styles to match different architectural designs, and they are very effective in protecting your home against the elements.

Types of Asphalt Shingles

There are three types of asphalt shingles that you can choose from.

  • 3-Tab asphalt shingles are usually the most basic and affordable. They feature three distinct tabs of equal size. They are thinner and lay flat, providing a symmetrical look across the roof. And because they are made from a single layer of asphalt, they generally weigh and cost less than other asphalt shingles.

  • Architectural asphalt shingles are manufactured with two or more layers of asphalt that are fused together for a thicker and richer multi-dimensional appearance. They are very popular as they give a nice multi-dimensional look. Due to their increased thickness, architectural shingles typically have a more extended manufacturer warrant, and some brands are rated to resist higher wind speeds.

  • Luxury or specialty shingles are bigger and thicker than other asphalt shingles and are created to mimic the appearance of natural wood shake and slate. They are made from a blend of asphalt and other materials that make them three times heavier than their natural counterparts, meaning they can stand up stronger to high winds, hurricanes, snow storms, and hail.

How Long Do Asphalt Shingles Last?

Depending on the materials used, your new roof can last anywhere from 20-30 years. However, you will likely need to check in with your local Northern Virginia roofer for proper maintenance and checkups over the years in order to maintain your roof's integrity.

Final Thoughts

Other types of roofing materials that are also popular in Northern Virginia include metal roofing, slate roofing, and tile roofing, but they are typically more expensive than asphalt shingles. Ultimately, the choice of roofing material will depend on factors such as climate, budget, aesthetic preferences, and durability requirements.
